Join our Outdoor Education team at YMCA Camp Mason, located on 650 wooded acres just adjacent to the pristine Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in Northwest New Jersey. Camp Mason seeks individuals for hands-on, field positions that directly involve teaching and leading groups of students in outdoor, environmental and recreational activities. Naturalists should expect full-time schedules that include weekends and/or evenings for night hikes and special programs. Duties: Plan and teach classes to groups between 10 - 14 yrs. old; supervise outdoor recreation activities related to schools and youth groups visiting camp; assist with curriculum development and planning; maintain specialized outdoor education equipment; assist with special programs and events; when needed, assist with cleaning and preparation of camp facilities; help maintain outpost site and key hiking trails; occasionally lead or assist hikes, camp-outs, night hike programs, or boat trips. Requirements: Associate or Bachelor's Degree or major in Environmental Science, Education, Biology, Botany or related field; must be comfortable outdoors and familiar with outdoor recreation and natural sciences; capable of supervising children; some knowledge of at least 3 key curriculum subjects (high ropes, low ropes, rock climbing / rappelling, boating, lifeguarding, ecology, pioneering skills, colonial history, fishing, nature crafts, peer counseling, maps, archery, riflery, limnology, hiking / backpacking, Native American lifestyles, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, plant and animal identification, and sciences); first aid and CPR will be needed, we will provide. Lifeguard for a Residential Treatment Facility in lower eastern Bucks County that serves children and adolescents with social/behavioral mental health diagnoses. Position: Staff Counselor

Upper Dublin Township seeks a qualified individual for the position of Upper Dublin Community Pool Manager in our Department of Parks & Recreation. Candidates must have a general knowledge of the principles and practices of swimming pool management and some knowledge of administrative methods and techniques. Candidates must have a flexible schedule including weekdays, evenings, weekends and select holidays.

Responsibilities of the position will include, but are not limited to:
• Managing the daily operations of the Upper Dublin Community Pool
• Providing customer service to visitors and respond to concerns in a timely manner
• Schedule, supervise and evaluate all facility staff
• In conjunction with the Parks Crew, perform regular and routine maintenance checks and water quality test; make minor repairs or adjustments; report major and/or emergency maintenance needs

The Southern End Community Association (SECA) located in Southern Lancaster County is seeking a full-time Recreation Director. SECA is a private non-profit agency serving the residents of Southern Lancaster County with community parks and recreation programs. This individual will plan, develop, and direct all of the agency’s recreation and parks programs throughout the year.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

·Serves as manager of the park and community center, with responsibility for scheduling activities, as well as the supervision of maintenance of all properties.

Summer Recreation Department Intern (posted April 08, 2009)

The Upper Providence Township Recreation Department is seeking a summer intern to oversee various Department programs and activities. This individual will be largely responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive plan to meet the needs of the 2008 Township summer recreation program. The applicant will be responsible for the preparation, administration, and monitoring of all activities and will supervise day-to-day on-site operations. Program areas include, but are not limited to, arts & crafts, sports, special events, cultural arts, outdoor programming, summer camp, etc. This position entails particular knowledge of the many aspects of conducting several specialized recreation programs and activities. Applicants for this position must possess strong leadership and supervisory skills as well strong administrative abilities and a creative mind.
The applicant should be a recent graduate of, or currently enrolled in, a Bachelor’s degree program in Parks and Recreation or a closely related field. The applicant must possess at least two years of job/volunteer experience in recreation, have a current PA Driver's License, and must be certified in CPR/First Aid or have the ability to obtain these certifications prior to the start of employment. All candidates must pass a pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check, and child abuse clearance in order to be considered for the position.
The Recreation Department intern will work under the general supervision the Township Recreation Director, and will work closely with volunteers, outside organizations, seasonal staff, program participants, and parents. The successful candidate will be responsible for the supervision of all seasonal staff and volunteers while on duty, and therefore must have the ability to work under time constraints and be capable of multi-tasking. This person must also be able to work independently as well as part of a team.

The rate of pay for this internship position is $15.00 per hour. This is a seasonal position and represents an employment commitment for the period May – September, 2009. Conservation Internships: The Pennsylvania Institute for Conservation Education offers internships providing undergraduate and graduate students with opportunities to learn and improve skills in:

Description: On intern is needed to assist with the implementation of a summer leadership program for high school students (for information on the program visit www.PICEweb.org and click on Youth Programs hyperlink). The Wildlife Leadership Adventures program is a pre-college course in wildlife ecology and management for highly motivated high school students. The program begins with a 5-day intensive field camp and is followed by year-round mentoring in conservation outreach and activities in the students’ home communities. The instructors for both camps will be professional wildlife biologists, managers, educators, and media professionals representing agencies and institutions such as Penn State University, PA Game Commission, Dept. of Conservation and Natural Resources, Audubon, the Quality Deer Management Association, US Army Corps. of Engineers, and others. Interns for this program will be provided with an unequaled opportunity to meet and network with a diverse array of some of the top professionals in the state.

Duties: The intern will primarily be responsible for assisting with logistical and operational aspects of the Wildlife Leadership Adventures program. The intern will be involved in planning and logistical support prior to and following the camp. During the week of camp (July 7-11) he/she will be expected to live at the field site (Raystown Field Station, housing at Field Station provided by PICE) and work the long hours necessary for operating a residential summer camp. During the camp, the intern will largely be responsible for managing the logistical aspects of the program (e.g. setting up equipment for lectures and field exercises), and making sure the operational aspects of the program run smoothly. Opportunities for programmatic involvement are possible if interns are interested and demonstrate sufficient motivation and responsibility to handle both. Interns will also assist, as needed, with other PICE natural history programs.

Qualifications: We are seeking highly motivated upper-level college students or graduate students in biology or education. Applicants must be team players, self-motivated, and have a strong interest in the outdoors and high school level education. Applicants must have their own transportation.

Stipend: $3,300 for 12 weeks ($275/wk)

Position: Executive Director

JOB SUMMARY: The Parks and Recreation Director is the chief administrative position for the Lewisburg Area Recreation Authority (LARA) which is responsible for providing a comprehensive, year-round, varied and stimulating recreation program with adequate, functional, and attractive facilities and play areas for people of all ages and abilities. The Executive Director works with the LARA board and local partners and is responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing the Authority in an efficient and cost-effective manner to meet the various needs of the community. The work involves a wide range of management functions including supervision of staff, developing policies, developing and maintaining the Authority’s budget, and coordinating all planning efforts for the Authority relating to strategic plans, master plans, feasibility studies, and marketing and promotional efforts.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.

Education and/or Experience

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties described below are indicative of what the Executive Director may be asked to perform. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Management
• Provide staff support to the LARA Board/Authority and other advisory groups involved in recreation programming and facilities.
• Work with the LARA Board, municipal staff, elected officials, Authority partners, and volunteer appointees on a daily basis to provide effective Authority services.
• Plan, organize, and manage the scope and direction of overall operations and services.
• Organize and supervise an effective administrative organization for the organization.
• Direct the acquisition, design, development, and maintenance of parkland, trails, open space, facilities, programs, and resources.
• Proactively provide recommendations for the enhancement of recreational opportunities for the Authority’s represented residents.
• Create monthly and yearly plans to accomplish Authority goals and objectives as set through the Comprehensive Plan and through Board guidance.
• Maintain the organization’s compliance with all laws and guidance under which the Authority falls, and with all agreements the organization has entered into.
• Responsible for the maintenance and development of the Authority’s web site.
• Oversee and coordinate the Authority computer network.
• Plan and execute fundraising activities.

2. Personnel
• Adjust staff organizational relationships and work assignments as necessary to accomplish required scope of services.
• Execute the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, evaluation, organization changes, and discipline of general authority staff in line with policy guidelines.
• Coordinate the hiring of administrative staff in conjunction with the Board’s appointed representatives.
• Coordinate staff efforts and Authority resources involving services and facilities that operate up to seven days a week.

3. Finance
• Prepare annual budget for review by the LARA Board.
• Direct, control, and account for revenue and expenditures of Authority funds in accordance with budget appropriations.
• Recommend capital improvement projects to the Board.
• Monitor fund balances and cash flows to ensure adequate revenues and availability; report major changes to the Board.
• Research, apply for, implement, and monitor grant opportunities and activities at the local, state, and federal levels.

4. Public Relations
• Promote and maintain positive public relations and image with other municipal and LARA programs and staff, external groups and organizations, media, and the community in general.
• Consult and/or confer with independent recreation groups and organizations and other community and special interest groups relative to Authority services and overall community-wide recreation activities and opportunities.
• Represent LARA in the community and at professional meetings.

5. Records/Data
• Maintain systematic, complete, and accurate records of Authority programs, activities, services, equipment, and personnel.
• Gather, maintain and analyze data on usage of facilities and program participants.
• Gather, maintain and analyze data related to fundraising efforts.

  • Be a positive role model when leading campers and high school-aged Counselors-in-Training.
  • Prepare and write accurate and creative lesson plans and other printed materials.
  • Assist in the daily operations of all phases of Summer Camp including camper paperwork as required, daily maintenance of nature center and teaching areas, equipment and supplies. Includes sweeping and mopping, restroom and litter clean up. 
  • Attend all in-service training programs including CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Help maintain a safe camp environment at all times.
  • Help plan and lead weekly field trips including safe boating, swimming and fossil hunting.
  • Assist campers with field research projects such as observing and monitoring wildlife and plants. Record data and compile reports.
  • Serve as a member of the Summer Camp team, providing assistance and leadership as needed.
  • Teach and monitor safe boating practices with campers.
  • Provide basic nature education to campers.
  • Provide assistance to Camp Coordinator in assessing and adjusting camp activities.
  • Effectively direct the work of volunteers.
  • Support and participate in Metroparks employee involvement and suggestion program.
